Seems they are interested in keeping the massive computer cooler. They actually said
We think we actually get much better cooling underwater than on land," says Ben Cutler, who is in charge of what Microsoft has dubbed Project Natick.Like Duh, a third grader can figure that out.
On top of this, the computer, should it fail is stuck there. It cannot be reached to repair it. Which means it is effectively a near permanent piece of junk to sit on the bottom of the ocean.
Hell my desktop PC is nearly obsolete within a few months of buying it. How future proof is a semi-truck size computer on the bottom of the ocean going to be.
Way to go Microsoft.
